MELBOURNE WESLEYAN SUNDAY SCHOOL

On Sunday week two excellent sermons were preached in the Wesleyan New Chapel, Collins Street, in behalf of the above institution; the Rev. Joseph Rennard Orton, minister of the congregation, officiated in the morning, and the Rev. William Waterfield, the respected pastor of the Independent Church in the evening, thus affording by a pleasing interchange of labours a gratifying illustration of a sentiment so glowingly expressed by Israel's King - "Behold how good and how pleasant a thing it is for brethren to dwell together in unity."

The report stated that about one hundred children received gratuitous instruction from twelve teachers, and that the management of the school was vested in the hands of a committee.

At ten o'clock on Monday morning the children assembled in the old chapel for the purpose of undergoing the accustomed examination in presence of their minister, teachers and friends. A variety of pieces, both of prose and poetry, as also selections from the scriptures, were recited by the children in a manner which bore testimony to their general application and the great assiduity of their teachers - and which drew forth expressions of admiration from the parents and friends of the scholars, and also the decided approbation of their beloved pastor.

At the close of the examination, a number of medals, books, &c., were distributed as rewards to the children, who were also plentifully regaled with buns, &c. After the repast the youthful company walked in procession towards the Government Paddock on the Eastern Hill; one of the senior boys preceding the girls bearing a white flag on which were the words 'Wesleyan Sunday School;' at the head of the boys was displayed another of blue.

On arriving near the residence of Captain William Lonsdale they halted to sing some verses of a hymn; at this moment His Honor made his appearance on his way to town, and was immediately greeted by three hearty and most animated cheers, which were kindly and condescendingly acknowledged. On their return to the schoolroom the children were dismissed in the usual way, and returned to their homes highly elated.

In the evening a numerous party of friends took tea together, after which several appropriate addresses were delivered, and the whole terminated by solemn prayer for God's blessing upon Sabbath School instruction.
